Panic, the company behind the innovative crank-driven retro video game handheld, the Playdate, has announced the new June 2023 games for its curated online game store called Catalog. There is a whole slew of games added, but here are our top picks:
P-Racer
The first game is a bit odd. P-Racer is a pseudo 3D cart racing game highly inspired by Mario Kart. Developer Matteo went all the way in trying to convert the Mario Kart-like racing experience to a platform as viscerally 1-bit as the Playdate. Additionally, he added some really impressive game modes. It is kind of amazing.
Treasure Chasers
If you’re looking for a condensed version of Pirates!, then look no further. Treasure Chasers lets you roam on a nicely animated map of an area that looks like the Caribbean. You can enter ports, fight other pirates, wheel and deal your way to infinite wealth!
The Barkless Doctrine
The Barkless Doctrine seems to be something between a “Choose your own adventure” and a classic text adventure. With not much to look at, the game relies heavily on its witty dialogues and clever writing style. The limited responses will most certainly force you out of your comfort zone, which sounds like quite a bit of fun.
Shift
Shift is a match-4 game where you shift tiles across a grid to match colors (or better yet, black or white) to clear the board and score points. The game has a basic but pleasing visual style with nice animation. Strategy, luck, and gambling all come into play for high scores and survival.
