Just two months short of the upcoming release of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, his final creation as a writer, the heartbreaking news reached the internet that Yoshitaka Murayama has passed away due to complications from a long-standing illness.
Yoshitaka gained international recognition as the creator of the first three Suikoden games and as the face of Konami’s Suikoden production team. Following the third installment, Murayama departed from Konami and established his own company, Blue Moon Studio, with the action game 10,000 Bullets marking the studio’s inaugural release. He briefly exited the gaming industry thereafter, focusing on writing credits for Manga adaptations of Magic: The Gathering.
In 2020, he resurfaced in the gaming scene with a new startup, Rabbit & Bear Studios, which subsequently announced Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes, a spiritual successor to the original Suikoden games. The game achieved its funding goals in a mere 4.5 hours, with all stretch goals included. One of those stretch goals was Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising, a 2D side-scrolling action RPG, which received mixed reviews.
Hundred Heroes is slated for release on April 24th of this year. Concurrently, Konami is set to release remasters of the first two Suikoden games. It was poised to be a significant year for Yoshitaka Murayama; unfortunately, he will not be here to witness both releases. Nevertheless, he leaves behind a legacy that, in the year of his passing, will be commemorated by his fans and the gaming industry through these upcoming games.
