9 Years of Shadows is set to arrive on PlayStation 4, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms later this month (on July 31) after successful stint on PC and Nitendo Switch. This indie metroidvania stands out for its mix of colorful and moody pixel visuals, immersive lighting and exploration focused design.
9 Years of Shadows follows Amarys, the last heir of a kingdom overtaken by a sudden, unexplained darkness nine years ago. She returns to her family’s abandoned castle to piece together what happened, finding old letters, faded portraits and fragmented journal entries hidden in dusty corridors. Along the way, Amarys wields her ancestor’s halberd—a versatile weapon that lets her perform sweeping light-infused strikes, vault over shadowy chasms and trigger distant switches when empowered by luminescent crystals. As she uncovers these traces of the past, subtle shadow-based abilities, like slipping through narrow shafts of light or briefly cloaking herself in darkness. You unlock new paths and environmental puzzles along the way. The story unfolds at a steady pace, each recovered memory adding weight to the quiet of the Eclipse Curse and the choices that led to the realm’s demise.
Console versions include native controller layouts improved loading times and frame pacing. PC cloud‑save functionality transfers into console play. Texturing retains crisp pixel visuals with dynamic lighting creating depth in castle interiors. Audio design balances ambient tones and combat sound cues.
If your up for the task at hand, you can now wishlist the game in the Playstation store. The Xbox version (as of today, juli 10th) is still missing from the store front but we can expect it to be added soon.
