Nintendo has rolled out a new display option for its Switch 2 Classics app: a CRT-style filter now available for SNES, NES and N64 titles included in the Expansion Pack. The filter aims to bring game visuals closer to how they originally appeared on analog hardware.
The new CRT setting introduces scanlines, softened interlacing, and a slight blur all aimed to give off a more authentic retro experience.
The CRT filter can be toggled on or off in the app’s settings menu. It’s been optimized for the Switch 2 display, where the effect feels most balanced. Original Switch owners will also receive the update, though the results vary due to hardware differences.
Along with this most notable feature, Nintendo also added a rewind feature for the N64 emulator as well the option to change the control scheme, which has been a highly requested feature from the day the emulator launched. The Rewind and CRT-filter are only available on Nintendo Switch 2. No announcements has been made for these features for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games.
These latest Classics application updates do not introduce new titles or downloadable content, but it marks a notable change in how Nintendo handles retro game presentation. Rather than applying full HD upscaling alone, the company apparently is actively is trying to improve the quality of the emulation framework by offering a visual mode that respects the analog characteristics of its older consoles.
