Sonic the Hedgehog is set to celebrate his 35th anniversary in 2026, marking three and a half decades since SEGA’s blue blur first appeared on the Mega Drive in 1991. To open the anniversary year, SEGA has released a new trailer that looks back on Sonic’s long-running history, from his early 16-bit origins to his modern incarnations across games, film, and television.

Since his debut, Sonic has grown into one of gaming’s most recognisable characters. What began as a fast-paced platformer designed to give SEGA a distinct mascot quickly expanded into a broad franchise spanning dozens of games, animated series, comic books, music releases and more recently a successful run of live-action films. Across multiple console generations, Sonic has remained closely tied to SEGA’s identity, even as the company transitioned from hardware manufacturer to third-party publisher.

According to SEGA, the anniversary celebrations will run throughout 2026 and include a wide range of activities aimed at both long-time fans and newer audiences. Planned initiatives include digital features charting Sonic’s evolution over the decades, fan meet-ups and community events, special brand and retail collaborations with limited merchandise, museum pop-ups and art exhibitions, live concert performances and a new narrative-driven podcast set within the Sonic universe.

Marcella Churchill, Vice President of Brand Marketing at SEGA of America, describes the anniversary as both a reflection and a forward-looking moment for the franchise. She notes that the goal is to bring the global Sonic community together while continuing to explore new ideas and formats for the character.

More announcements are expected as the year progresses, including additional partnerships, collectibles, and fan-focused experiences. At this stage, SEGA has not outlined any concrete plans for new game releases tied specifically to the 35th anniversary, though such announcements could still be part of the broader anniversary pipeline. Updates and official media will be shared via the dedicated 35th anniversary website as the celebrations unfold.
