The golden age of the Commodore Amiga is often defined by a few heavy hitters, and Defender of the Crown sits firmly at the top of that list. During the recent Future Games Show Spring Showcase, developer and publisher Nordcurrent revealed that the 1986 strategy icon is making a return. Titled Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns, the remake is headed to PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The original was a cinematic marvel for its time, blending grand strategy with arcade-style mini-games. This new version, developed by Warsaw-based studio Black Tower Basement, aims to preserve the Saxon-Norman conflict while adding a necessary coat of modern polish for 2026.
Three ways to rule
Rather than a simple high-definition port, Nordcurrent is offering three distinct modes to cater to different playstyles:
- Retro Mode: Built for purists, this mode stays as close to the 1986 original as possible, offering a near-perfect recreation with the added benefit of modern system stability.
- Classic Mode: This serves as the “standard” remake experience. It features a new visual identity—blending 2.5D environments with high-fidelity pixel art—and refined mechanics that smooth out the original’s steeper edges.
- Kingdom Mode: The most significant addition to the formula. This is a brand-new, dice-driven roguelike adventure where players build tactical decks to influence their success across procedurally generated campaigns.

Jousting and Tactics
The core loop remains intact. As a Saxon lord, you will manage territories on a strategic world map, engage in diplomacy with figures like Robin Hood, and fight to reclaim the throne. The “cinematic” events that made the original a household name—castle sieges, sword fights, and jousting tournaments—are all present, now enhanced by dynamic lighting and cleaner interface systems.
We always had a soft spot for the Amiga library, and seeing a title as influential as Defender of the Crown get a thoughtful revival is great news. The addition of a roguelike mode suggests the developers are looking to expand the game’s longevity a bit and maybe add some appeal for a younger generation as well.
The game is currently available to wishlist on Steam and console stores. While a specific release date hasn’t been confirmed yet but the developer and publisher has set May for its release.
