Lately, the sheer number of retro racers that have been dropped on the digital video game outlets has been a bit overwhelming. Not too long ago, we reviewed Classic Racer Elite and Sunrise GP. However, our site wasn’t established yet when Formula Retro Racing, 80’s Overdrive, and Slipstream (although you can check out my EuroRetroGamer’s video review) were released. With so many games coming out, their names are starting to blend together a little. And then we haven’t even delved into the games that initiated this trend a couple of years ago, such as Horizon Chase Turbo and Chasin’ Blast.
Now, New Star Games is tapping into the gravy train (presumably) with New Star GP. The game is now available as an Early Access title on Steam. Gamers that buy the Early Access version will get the Lucas (yeah, it’s a Lotus actually) car as an added bonus.
This is what New Star Games themselves has to tell about the game:
New Star GP is a fast and exciting arcade motorsport game with stunning retro visuals. Play Career Mode starting in the 80’s and work your way through decades of racing. Upgrade your car and your support team, or chase high scores in Championship Mode. Play the game on your own or in split-screen with up to three friends.
The initial Early Access version has races set in both the 80’s and the 90’s. It contains 56 individual race events taking place in iconic racing venues like Brisbane, Quebec and Côte D’Azur. As early access moves toward a full release. There are also plans to evolve the Career Mode to include future decades of racing along with new cars, locations, tracks and rivals.
The Championship Mode has a selection of different championships to play in either single player or with up to three other players.
The game that oozes a strong Virtua Racer vibe, in terms of visuals and gameplay. It features retro-visualized versions of cars that have historical weight in terms of Grand Prix racing. Formula 1 fans should recognize many legendary F1 cars in New Star GP’s line-up, from fairly recent back to the pioneering days of F1.
