On October 9, The Legend of Steel Empire will launch digitally for PS4 and PS5, giving PlayStation players their first chance to experience this cult shoot ’em up classic. The game already made waves on Nintendo Switch, where our review at Retrolike praised its blend of modern polish and faithful design. We scored it 8 out of 10, noting its strong atmosphere, accessible gameplay and challenge that shines once the difficulty is raised.
From the ’90s to Now
Originally released in 1992 for the Sega Mega Drive under the names Empire of Steel in Europe and Koutetsu Teikoku in Japan, the game quickly stood out for its dieselpunk aesthetic. Combining late 19th-century industrial design with steampunk influences, it offered a visual identity unlike the futuristic shooters of its time.
Over the years, Steel Empire has been reintroduced through versions on Game Boy Advance, 3DS, and Switch. Each kept the spirit of the original intact and the PlayStation release continues that tradition.

Gameplay and Features
You can choose between two aircraft: the agile Striker Airplane or the heavier Zeppelin, equipped with an aerial mine launcher. Across seven stages, you’ll face massive battleships, armored trains, and floating fortresses.
Modern updates include smoother controls, improved animations, and the ability to shoot down enemy projectiles. These new additions add more depth without losing the original’s unique feel. Unlike many shooters, dying doesn’t reset your weapon level, keeping progress intact and momentum steady.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The Legend of Steel Empire stands out for its style, strong stage design, and soundtrack that reinforces its heavy industrial tone. The choice of craft adds replay value, though some may find the default difficulty too forgiving. Extras like online leaderboards are also absent, limiting long-term replayability.
