With the Nintendo Switch 2 on the brink of shipping out to stores and pre-order buyers, the timing of new Nintendo Switch Online additions might seem a little odd. But we’re not complaining. We’re pleasantly surprised by how unpredictable the Nintendo Online release schedule has been since day one. This drop of Game Boy games again leans a bit the obscure side of the immense Game Boy catalog. So let’s take a look at what this update brings.
Survival Kids
One of the Game Boy’s most original hidden gems, Survival Kids strands you on a deserted island with nothing but your wits and a handful of supplies. You’ll need to explore, scavenge, craft and survive as time, hunger and the environment press in. With multiple endings and a surprisingly deep gameplay loop, this was Konami at its most experimental and rewarding.
Gradius The Interstellar Assault
Konami’s legendary shooter series got a bold rework on Game Boy with Gradius The Interstellar Assault. While stripped down to fit the hardware, it still delivers fast-paced horizontal shooting, creative level design and familiar power-ups. It’s leaner, tougher and a true handheld challenge that stands tall in the Gradius lineage.
Kirby’s Star Stacker
A charming puzzle spin-off starring everyone’s favorite pink puffball. Kirby’s Star Stacker takes the classic falling-block format and gives it a distinctly Kirby twist, complete with cutesy visuals, catchy music and a breezy pace. Easy to pick up but tricky to master, it’s a portable puzzle game with plenty of heart.
The Sword of Hope
This first-person RPG takes cues from Shadowgate and Wizardry, but with a lighter tone and a focus on narrative. The Sword of Hope blends simple exploration, turn-based battles and a fantasy mystery that plays out like a storybook. It’s slow and deliberate, but rewarding for players who enjoy their RPGs old-school and portable.
