One pillar of the home computer era is making a sort of comeback. Huey Games, run by Rob and Andrew Hewson of Hewson Consultants—the former publisher behind ZX80 and Commodore 64 classics like Paradroid, Uridium, Exelon, and Cybernoid—has just announced a Kickstarter campaign to revive one of its other legendary games: Uridium. Developed by Four5Six, Hyper Sentinel Fusion sets out to be a high paced free roaming shump, where the aim is to destroy the defenses of colossal procedural generated bases and ships.
In 2018, Uridium received a neo-retro homage in the form of the critically acclaimed Hyper Sentinel. This time, Rob and Andrew have opted to expand on Hyper Sentinel‘s concept by incorporating gameplay elements from Paradroid, while also adding modern roguelike mechanics—evolving it into the fittingly named Hyper Sentinel Fusion.
The Kickstarter description delves deeper into the game’s features:
Swoop across the surface of colossal, procedurally-generated space-destroyers and enemy bases in your Sentinel fighter. Harness the silky smooth controls to dog-fight, dodge and destroy surface defences. Endlessly replayable sandbox shoot-em-up action!
- Blistering combat built on fast, fluid controls
- Pick your targets wisely to affect the challenges that await within
- Defeat monstrous bosses and discover awesome ship upgrades
Once the defences have been lowered, land your ship and send your Hyper Droid inside to plunder and pillage whatever you can steal before the whole place self destructs. Make choices on the fly to ensure you maximise your plunder, but make sure you get out before the whole place goes boom.
Grab what you can and escape before the time runs out, steal your enemies form and weapons to turn their abilities against them and hunt down the Mother-Brain to secure powerful upgrade pods.
Exclusive 3.5″ Mega Floppy Micro Drive Edition
Apart from the game itself, Huey Games also announced a Kickstarter perk or tier: the Exclusive 3.5″ Mega Floppy Micro Drive Edition. Deep down, we would have loved for it to be an actual 3.5″ floppy, loadable in a disk drive, but in reality, it’s a USB drive in disguise. Which is of course a bit more practical. Still, it remains a neat concept.
Be sure to wishlist the game on Steam and/or enable notifications on Kickstarter to stay updated on the project.
