A hidden bonus game grows up
From our friends at Songbird Productions comes the latest in amazing caravan-style shooters, MicroVaders Caravan Edition, a bite-sized yet frantic version of the original 2024 release.
In October 2024, MicroVaders hit the scene exclusively for the Atari Lynx as a 40-wave shooter in which players battle alien hordes that have overwhelmed remote outposts in space. The game was inspired by and expands upon a hidden bonus game that featured only two enemies, a single level and no audio, and was never released during the original Atari Lynx’s lifespan.
Both the full version and this Caravan Edition maintain a frantic pace that evokes classics such as Galaga and Gorf, allowing the game to truly shine.
Three minutes of pure panic
In MicroVaders Caravan Edition, players face a seven-wave, three-minute race to the finish that may remind fans of Summer Carnival shooters such as Alzadick and Nexzr, released in the early 1990s for the NEC PC Engine. One mistake means instant game over, as players are given only a single life and must eliminate every alien within the short time limit.
MicroVaders offers several impressive features for fans of the genre. The ROM version, available now, along with the cartridge release scheduled for August 2026, supports EEPROM saving. This means high scores remain permanently stored, allowing players to continually challenge their personal bests instead of seeing their scores reset after each session.
The game also introduces an achievement system, something I personally have never encountered in a retro-era caravan shooter. There are eight achievements in total, all of which are either new or modified from the original game.
In addition, the Caravan Edition features new music, updated graphics and gameplay that has been extensively reworked from the original release.
Two ways to play
I mentioned earlier that high scores and achievements can be saved directly to the cartridge or ROM. That detail may have caught some readers’ attention because, for the first time in Songbird Productions’ twenty-seven-year history, this release will be available in two formats instead of one.
The cartridge version is scheduled for release in August 2026 with an MSRP of $34.95. However, if you own a RetroHQ Atari Lynx Drive, enjoy playing Lynx ROMs through emulation or use compatible hardware devices, you can purchase the ROM directly from Songbird Productions today for just $9.95 and begin playing immediately.
A score chaser’s dream
After several dozen playthroughs, I found it difficult to put this game down. I tested it on both original Atari Lynx hardware and the GearLynx emulator, and it performed flawlessly without slowdown or hiccups of any kind.
For fans of the genre and dedicated Atari Lynx enthusiasts, MicroVaders Caravan Edition is an easy recommendation, even for players who already own the original full release.

This version was made possible by the team of Carl Forhan, owner of Songbird Productions, who handled much of the heavy lifting alongside Dave Dies, a legendary programmer whose credits include the TRS-80 Color Computer version of Gauntlet as well as the Atari Lynx ports of Joust and Robotron. Also deserving recognition is Alexander Grade, better known as AnderLex, who developed acclaimed Lynx titles such as Odynexus, RED and the original MicroVaders in 2024.
