On the backdrop of the sad news of Kunio-kun’s creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto passing way on April 2, Arc System Works has today announced River City Saga: Journey to the West, a new spin on the long-running Kunio series, set to release on June 4, 2026. The game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Steam.
A different take on a familiar formula
This entry draws inspiration from Journey to the West, one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. Players step into the role of Kunio, taking on forms based on Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Tang Sanzang.

While earlier River City Saga titles leaned into strategy elements similar to Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this new release shifts direction. Journey to the West is a solo roguelike action game, built around repeated runs, incremental progression, and character upgrades.
Roguelike structure with character progression
Players begin with Sun Wukong, focusing on speed and mobility. As progress is made, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing become available, introducing heavier and ranged playstyles. Each run allows players to grow stronger and unlock so-called Secret Skills, which can be applied across characters.

The structure suggests a loop where experimentation and build variety take center stage, rather than a fixed campaign progression.
Familiar faces in new roles
Series regulars return, reimagined as figures from Journey to the West. Some will assist the player, while others appear as bosses, leaning into the series’ usual mix of light combat and comedic encounters.
That balance has been a defining trait of the River City games, and it appears to remain intact here, even with the shift to a roguelike format.
Release on June 4
River City Saga: Journey to the West launches June 4, 2026, across Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC. The move to a roguelike structure marks a clear change in direction for the series and it will likely determine how this entry lands with long-time fans.
