Toaplan’s classic shoot ’em up Zero Wing is officially heading to the NEOGEO AES+ as a physical cartridge, although it won’t be part of the initial wave of releases.
PLAION appears to have quietly revealed another game for its upcoming NEOGEO AES+ during Tokyo Game Show 2026. A physical Zero Wing cartridge showed up at the company’s booth, and further confirmation from the show now makes it clear that this wasn’t just something PLAION brought along for demonstration purposes.
In a TGS video by 4amLaundry, it was again reconfirmed that Zero Wing is planned as a future AES+ cartridge release. It will not be added to the ten games already announced for the system’s initial line-up, but will instead arrive at a later date. On questions asked by 4amLaundry if other games are planned for the near future, Plaion’s representive Namer Merli, confirmed on going support for the AES+ eco.system and there will be more information soon.
That makes Zero Wing particularly interesting. Unlike games such as Metal Slug, Pulstar, Garou: Mark of the Wolves and The King of Fighters 2002, Zero Wing was never released for the Neo Geo.
From homebrew project to official cartridge
The version shown by PLAION is based on the Neo Geo conversion created by homebrew developer h0ffman. The project has been known for some time, with h0ffman working on bringing Toaplan’s 1989 arcade shooter to SNK’s hardware.
What started as an unofficial Neo Geo conversion has now effectively made the jump to an officially licensed physical release.
Zero Wing itself originally appeared in arcades in 1989 and was developed by Toaplan. It later received ports for the Mega Drive and PC Engine CD-ROM², with the European Mega Drive version eventually becoming infamous for its rather creative English translation and the line “All your base are belong to us.”
There was, however, never a Neo Geo version.
AES+ could become more than a reissue platform
Zero Wing therefore gives us a first indication of what PLAION has planned beyond reproducing existing Neo Geo cartridges.
The initial AES+ catalogue consists of games that already existed for SNK’s original hardware. Zero Wing takes a different route by bringing an arcade game to the Neo Geo for the first time, decades after its original release.
It also puts PLAION’s recent comments about investing further in the AES+ platform into a different perspective. When the company announced the console’s delay to September 16, 2027, it said the response to the project had given it confidence to invest in a bigger future for the platform.
An officially licensed Zero Wing conversion suggests that future could include more than simply reissuing the existing Neo Geo catalogue.
No release date or price has been announced for the Zero Wing cartridge yet. What we do know is that it won’t be part of the initial AES+ wave and is planned for release sometime afterwards.
And suddenly, the future of the NEOGEO AES+ just became quite a bit more interesting.
