Intec Gaming Time Breaker LightGun Review (PlayStation 1 & 2)

For retro gaming enthusiasts, few problems have been as frustrating as the death of CRT televisions. As HDTVs became standard in the mid-2000s, classic lightgun games were effectively left behind due to incompatibility with modern displays. Titles built around precision aiming—once staples of the living room—became unplayable for most users.

Now, nearly two decades later, the Intec Gaming Time Breaker LightGun aims to solve that problem. Designed for both the Sony PlayStation and Sony PlayStation 2, this modern wireless lightgun brings classic shooting games into the HD era—and may be one of the most versatile solutions currently available.

The HDTV Problem—and a modern Solution

Classic light guns like the Namco GunCon relied on CRT display technology to function properly. Modern LCD and OLED screens simply don’t work the same way, rendering those peripherals obsolete.

The Time Breaker enters a space currently led by solutions like the Sinden Lightgun, offering a more accessible and console-focused alternative. For PlayStation users specifically, it provides a plug-and-play experience that restores compatibility with a large portion of the original light gun library—without requiring a CRT.

    Setup and requirements

To use the Time Breaker, a modern display-compatible or projector setup is required. Since neither stock PlayStation console natively has a HDMI port built-in, an external adapter is required. For this review, testing was done using the XYAB RGB+ HD Link Cable Adapter, which was generously sent to us by Stone Age Gamer which delivers:

    • 720p output in 4:3
    • 1080p output in 16:9
    • Excellent RGB signal clarity and color separation

This type of adapter is highly recommended for anyone looking to use light guns on HDTVs and anyone that wants the best possible video output on a Sony PlayStation 1 and 2 that does not want to sacrifice the option to continue using AV, and RF on the Sony PlayStation 1, in addition to Component on the Sony PlayStation 2.

    Setup

    Hardware Setup

The Time Breaker comes partially disassembled, requiring minimal assembly using the included rod and wrench. Once assembled, setup differs slightly depending on the console:

    PlayStation 1:

    • Connect the PS1 wireless receiver to controller port 1 or 2
    • Attach the infrared receiver and stand on top of monitor, television, or projector
    • Power the unit with a 5V/2A USB power adapter, which you need to provide

    PlayStation 2:

    • Follow the same steps as for PlayStation 1
    • Use and connect the PS2 USB receiver instead

After the initial setup, sync the gun and receiver using the pairing buttons and calibrate using the two rear buttons (top left and bottom right screen points), by first holding the first button, pointing the sight to the top left of screen and pressing the trigger and then doing the same with the bottom right using their button.

Proper calibration is critical for accurate gameplay.

    Features, support and performance

Once configured, the Time Breaker settles into a setup that feels both flexible and reliable across different display types. Its core feature set focuses on responsiveness and adaptability rather than overcomplicating things. Wireless functionality keeps movement unrestricted, while tracking remains consistent and precise. The calibration system is supported by clear LED feedback, making it easier to dial things in without guesswork. On top of that, extras like toggleable recoil and an optional turbo fire mode add a bit of customization, depending on how you prefer to play.

It also supports a wide range of display formats, making it suitable for different setups:

    • 4:3 standard displays
    • 16:9 widescreen
    • 21:9 ultrawide
    • Projector setups

Testing across multiple display sizes—from 42” to 120” projection screens—showed consistently smooth performance with no major issues once calibrated correctly.

Which Playstation 1 games are compatible with the Time Breaker lightgun?

One important limitation: the Time Breaker supports GunCon standard games only. It does not support Konami’s Justifier/Hyperblaster standard.

Out of 33 total PlayStation 1 light gun titles, 23 are compatible.

    Full Compatible Game List

    GameRegion(s)

Notably, some titles like Elemental Gearbolt and Maximum Force support both GunCon and Justifier standards, making them universally compatible also Die Hard Trilogy and Resident Evil Survivor despite having a North America release are not GunCon 1 compatible and did not make the list.  This list is also the most comprehensive and complete list and any other reviewer other than Retrolike and Stone Age Gamer that uses this is essentially copying and pasting this, as the reviewer owns every single light gun game ever released on the Sony PlayStation 1 and all its regions and has tested every single title for complete accuracy.

Which Playstation 2 games are compatible with the Time Breaker lightgun?

Intec reports support for approximately 15 PlayStation 2 titles, including:

    Game
    Time Crisis II
    Time Crisis 3
    Time Crisis: Crisis Zone
    Vampire Night
    Ninja Assault
    Resident Evil: Dead Aim
    Dino Stalker
    Virtua Cop: Elite Edition

While not all titles were independently verified for this review, early testing suggests solid compatibility with GunCon-supported games.

    Limitations

Despite its strengths, the Time Breaker does come with a few limitations that are worth keeping in mind. It does not support Justifier or Hyperblaster titles, which means a portion of the lightgun library remains out of reach. The setup also depends on an external HDMI adapter, adding an extra step compared to a more plug-and-play experience. On top of that, each setup requires its own calibration, so switching between displays or environments isn’t entirely seamless.

    Build quality and ergonomics

The Time Breaker sticks closely to the original GunCon design, and that turns out to be a smart move. It sits comfortably in the hand, with a grip that feels natural even during longer sessions, while the weight is balanced well enough to avoid fatigue. The trigger has a firm, responsive pull, giving each shot a satisfying sense of feedback. What sets it apart, however, is the move to wireless functionality. It removes the usual cable constraints without introducing noticeable trade-offs in accuracy, making it feel like a straightforward evolution rather than a compromise.

    HD Link Cable Adapter

Also, you can get the XYAB RGB+ HD Link Cable Adapter for the Sony PS1/2 from Stone Age Gamer. or you can add it in with the light gun, or its add-on from the same screen.  If you act fast enough, you might be able to get it at $35, a $5 savings, however this is a limited-time add-on.

There is one more add-on available on the light gun purchasing page, and is only needed if you plan on purchasing 2 or more lightguns for use on the Sony PlayStation 2, they do sell a Universal 4-Port USB 3.0 Gaming Hub so you can connect multiple USB devices with the Sony PlayStation 2 and is a $14.99 add-on.

    SuperStationOne compatibility

For those who own a SuperStationOne or are waiting for their wave release to ship out. We weren’t able to test the light gun yet on the FPGA Playstation compatible console, because I haven’t received my pre-order yet. As soon as we were able to test it on the device, we will will update this paragraph.

    Future Intec Projects

In the future, Intec Gaming is planning on releasing more HDTV compatible light guns on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, and Microsoft Xbox.  If this is any indication of things to come, we hope to cover all of these variants in the future.

    Where it stands

The Intec Gaming Time Breaker LightGun is one of the most practical and affordable solutions for bringing classic PlayStation light gun games into the modern era. While it doesn’t support every title, its strong performance, broad GunCon compatibility, and flexible display support make it an essential accessory for retro enthusiasts. If you want to play Time Crisis, Point Blank, and other GunCon classics on a modern HDTV or projector, this is currently one of the best options available.

Hopefully Intec can someday revisit the Playstation light gun market with a definitive version of the Time Breaker and release one with both GunCon and the Justifier/Hyperblaster standard supported so we can play classics like Die Hard Trilogy 1, Area 51, Lethal Enforcers, Mighty Hits Special, Project: Horned Owl, Snatcher and Policenauts as well.
