SNK and PLAION have announced the return of one of the most recognisable home arcade systems. The NEOGEO AES+ is set to launch on November 12, 2026, with pre-orders opening today.
The original NEOGEO AES, released in 1990, stood apart by delivering near-identical arcade experiences at home using the same cartridges as SNK’s MVS arcade system. That approach positioned it as a premium product, with hardware and games priced well above typical home consoles.
A modern reissue with original hardware philosophy
PLAION presents the AES+ as a continuation of that approach. Rather than relying on software emulation, the system uses ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) to recreate the original hardware behaviour. The console is also fully compatible with original NEOGEO AES cartridges.

Original cartridges and new releases
Alongside support for existing collections, a selection of classic titles will be available at launch:
- Metal Slug
- The King of Fighters 2002
- Garou: Mark of the Wolves
- Samurai Shodown V Special
- Pulstar
- Twinkle Star Sprites
- Magician Lord
- Shock Troopers
- Big Tournament Golf
- Over Top
Each title will be released as a physical cartridge.Modern output, unchanged core. While the focus remains on authenticity, the AES+ includes several practical updates:
- HDMI output up to 1080p
- Low-latency video output
- AV output for CRT displays
- On-device BIOS and DIP switch controls
- Persistent high score saving
- Reduced power consumption
The system ships with an arcade stick, with additional accessories such as a gamepad and memory card available separately.
Anniversary edition and pricing
Two versions will be available:
- Standard Edition: €199.99
- 35th Anniversary Edition: €299.99
The anniversary bundle includes a white console, matching arcade stick, memory card, and an exclusive white Metal Slug cartridge. Individual games are expected to retail at €79.99.

Not FPGA-based
Despite the focus on hardware accuracy, the AES+ is not FPGA-based, instead relying on dedicated ASIC hardware to recreate the original system.
More details on additional games and accessories are expected later this year
